Hormone Replacement Therapy

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is not a new approach; it has been used since the 1930’s. Bioidentical hormones are legal to prescribe and use in the US, although the FDA has not given its specific approval. The lack of FDA approval is because there are no official placebo-controlled studies to prove whether bioidentical hormones are safer than standard hormone replacement therapy.

In the beginning of your therapy, you will need frequent testing to check that each hormone component is in proper balance. Once you are feeling well and tests show a proper balance, your visits can be less often – usually only once a year.

Like other forms of hormone supplementation and treatment, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is relatively safe and effective when prescribed and monitored by medical professionals. Patients taking BHRT should expect to have their condition monitored, with frequent testing to verify efficacy and hormone levels. Medical oversight from our nurse practitioners is also vital to improved treatment outcomes.

You will see improvement within the first 2 to 3 weeks of therapy, but it will take up to 8 weeks to feel the full effect. We want to achieve balance with the lowest dose of each hormone – which is also the recommendation of the FDA and American College of OBGYN.

When you first start your therapy, your hormone doctor will begin with the lowest dose possible that is consistent with your goals. The doses vary widely based on individual circumstances. Getting hormone therapy “just right” often takes time, patience, and repeated testing. A difference in just a few milligrams or micrograms can be the difference between success and failure, and that’s what makes compounded BHRT so unique. When pharmacists can individually tailor your dose down to the microgram, it’s easier to achieve success at the lowest possible dose.

Yes. We calculate the dosing of your bio-identical hormone mixture based on your unique hormone levels. To be truly bioidentical, we want to check your levels to make sure they are in balance. Your insurance will typically pay for blood testing or we have affordable cash pay options.
